The city was shocked anew last spring, when more than 500 people were put out of work by the sudden bankruptcy and closure of North Adams Regional Hospital, which had been the city's largest employer. The 20-square-mile municipality, the smallest city in Massachusetts, now has a population of less than 14,000 it lost 4,000 jobs in 1985 with the closure of Mass MoCA's predecessor in the buildings, Sprague Electric Co., and about as many residents left over the next 15 years. In North Adams, the median household income of $38,000 annually is almost $30,000 less than the state figure, according to federal Census figures.
